Lower Eastside Girls Club Center for Wellbeing & Happiness

New York, New York

Maestro Cares Foundation partnered with the Lower Eastside Girls Club (LESGC) in New York City to fund the construction of their Center for Wellbeing and Happiness. This is Maestro Cares Foundation’s second project in the United States and first project in New York.

The Center for Wellbeing and Happiness (CWBH) initiative stems from a core belief that the wellbeing of LESGC members is intimately connected to the wellbeing of her family, her community, and her world. CWBH provides wrap-around wellness services to families in the Lower East Side, a densely populated and ethnically diverse neighborhood in New York City. The CWBH offers free programming for all ages in movement, wellness education, nutrition, on-site counseling, family and parenting support groups, maternity support, and job training. Community members can register for sessions and workshops or drop in for community events and programs. The aim is to foster psychosocial well-being, share resources and provide lifelong skills that ensure our members and their families thrive now and in the future.

The Lower Eastside Girls Club connects girls and young women to healthy and successful futures through free, innovative year-round programming and mentoring. Founded in 1996 by neighborhood mothers to address the lack of services and facilities for girls in our community, LESGC now annually serves over 1000 youth aged 10-23.

LESGC offers free year-round programming in the Arts, STEM, Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Wellness and Movement. Their facility includes a Maker Shop for coding and robotics; Environmental Studies lab for STEM exploration; Alphabet City Art School for visual arts and crafts; Center for Media and Social Justice for digital media, film and photography; Sound Studio for music production and our radio station/podcast, WGRL (Where Girl Radio Lives); Design Studio for fashion and material arts; a productive rooftop farm; full Culinary Education Center; and 64-seat dome planetarium.

Our Impact

The Center for Wellbeing and Happiness serves as a community center for the Lower Eastside Girls Club Community, a predominantly low-income Latino community. This project includes the mothers, grandmothers, younger brothers and other family members of the girls into to the Lower East Side Girls programming by offering free programs they can benefit from. The center recognizes that the wellbeing of the girl is connected to the wellbeing of her family and community. This center offers the various programs to the community at no cost.
