Play Ball Again

Local Initiatives Support Group (LISC)

Vega Baja, Loiza, Isla Verde, Yabucoa and Yauco, Puerto Rico

Maestro Cares Foundation (MCF), along with UNICEF and The Good Bunny Foundation, funded the restoration of 6 Little League fields in Puerto Rico. This initiative was launched by the Local Initiative Support Corporation (LISC), which aimed to restore 25 fields across the island that were destroyed by Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

The six baseball fields that MCF and The Good Bunny Foundation helped restore are throughout Puerto Rico in the cities of Vega Baja, Loiza, Isla Verde, Yabucoa, and two are in Yauco. Now, more than 4,000 Puerto Rican children and their families are playing ball again on these fields.

MCF co-founder Marc Anthony said about the project, “This is a celebration of resilience, just as much as it is of baseball...in rebuilding these fields, we can help families take another step beyond the trauma of the last two years toward a stronger, healthier future for our children and their families.”

Baseball plays a significant role in the development of youth leadership and in creating safe spaces for structured and unstructured leisure time in Puerto Rico. The island is home to a very competitive Little League program, with several thousand youth participants, and is one of the strongest producers of Major League Baseball players.
