Casa Libertad: Hovde House

San Jose, Costa Rica
Groundbreaking: Spring 2020
Grand Opening: Spring 2021
This is Maestro Cares first project in Costa Rica. Hovde Foundation and Maestro Cares have joined efforts to support Face of Justice and fund the construction of the “Casa Libertdad”, a home for young girls who have been trafficked or sexually exploited.

The “Casa Libertdad” is an immediate care center to provide a holistic and systematic program of emotional, physical and spiritual restoration for teen girls ages 12-17 who have been exploited or trafficked. These young girls stay for a period of time ranging from 2 weeks to 2 years or more, depending on the dynamics and complexities of each case.

The legalization of prostitution in Costa Rica has created a booming market for sexual tourism with estimates of 240,000 or more men coming to Costa Rica each year solely for this purpose. Like elsewhere in the world, poverty, a lack of education, and a lack of job opportunities leave women and children extremely vulnerable to sexual exploitation. As a result, many young girls who have suffered from exploitation experience extreme trauma by the time they become teenagers.
