San Juan Sacatepéquez, Guatemala
Grand Opening: April 2nd, 2018
In association with Aldeas Infantiles SOS Guatemala, Maestro Cares Foundation constructed a community center serving children and families of San Juan Sacatepéquez, Guatemala. Services include nutritional and health support to children including vaccinations. Grade school children have access to a technology center and educational support. Parents are enrolled in programs geared towards violence prevention and self-esteem development.

Aldeas Infantiles SOS in Guatemala began in 1976, when an earthquake almost completely destroyed the city of San Juan Sacatepequez, about 30 kilometers from the capital, Guatemala City. Since then, Aldeas Infantiles SOS Guatemala’s efforts have been aimed at the well-being of children and young people who need help. Their efforts are focused on different programs of family strengthening, homes through Aldeas Infaniles SOS for children who cannot live with their families, and youth and vocational training program.

Sixty children attend the center daily and 40 families benefit from the center.

It’s estimated that there are more than 370,000 orphans in Guatemala. Many of these children come from families facing tremendous poverty; 70 percent of people in Guatemala live below the poverty level.
