#OurChildren Around the World: The United States

Almost 18,000 children in the state of Illinois are in the foster care system. Most children are placed temporarily in foster care due to parental abuse or neglect. These figures prompted us to get involved to change lives and build dreams in our very own hometown. We partnered with SOS Children’s Village Illinois for our first project in the United States – building the SOS Children’s Villages Illinois Roosevelt Square Community Center.

This community center is equipped to provide local residents with academic, therapeutic, social and recreational services and activities. It will serve up to 84 foster children: from birth up to 21 years of age, as well as families in the Roosevelt Square Village and more than 5,000 individuals annually from University Village, Lower West Side/Pilsen, Little Village, North Lawndale and other surrounding neighborhoods. It will also be a central gathering place for neighborhood residents – a safe space where they can meet in the community and connect to public resources.

As Co-Founder of Maestro Cares Foundation, Henry Cardenas said, “The grand opening of this community center in near and dear to Maestro Cares Foundation’s heart because it is our first project in our hometown of Chicago – we’re excited to be able to provide children and families with a state of the art center, and most importantly give them access to the resources they need to help them grow in a stable and comprehensive homes and communities.”
